German Smoke Grenade Nebelhandgranate 39 – Replica

Decorative replica of the German Nebelhandgranate 39 (Nb.Hgr.39), a smoke grenade developed as a specialized variant of the famous Stielhandgranate 24 (M24) and used by the Wehrmacht throughout World War II. Featuring a wooden handle and metal body, this reproduction faithfully reflects one of the most recognizable German smoke grenades of the 1939–1945 period.

Introduced in 1939, the Nebelhandgranate 39 was designed to conceal troop movements, screen advances and withdrawals, obscure enemy observation, and protect infantry positions. Unlike the explosive M24 stick grenade, the Nb.Hgr.39 contained a smoke-generating composition instead of an explosive charge, releasing smoke through small vents positioned beneath the grenade head.

Because of its strong resemblance to the M24 grenade, the German Army introduced distinguishing features to prevent battlefield confusion, including large markings and a white identification band around the handle, while later versions added tactile grooves so soldiers could identify the grenade by touch in low visibility conditions.
